Widow’s Bay Just Made Emmy History — So Is It Time to Start Watching?

Apple TV’s weird little horror-comedy just walked away with 14 Emmys, broke a major television record and officially became the show everyone is talking about.

If Widow’s Bay wasn't already on your watchlist, the Emmys just gave you 14 reasons to add it.

The Apple TV horror-comedy completely dominated the 2026 Emmy Awards, taking home 14 trophies for its debut season — the most Emmys ever won by a comedy series in a single year.

Yes, ever.

The previous record belonged to The Studio, which collected 13 awards in 2025. One year later, another Apple TV comedy has already taken its crown.

And Widow’s Bay didn't just rack up wins in technical categories. It basically swept the biggest comedy awards of the night.

The Widow’s Bay Sweep

The series won Outstanding Comedy Series, beating a category stacked with some of television's biggest shows, including Hacks, The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Only Murders in the Building, Nobody Wants This, Shrinking and Margo's Got Money Troubles.

Then came the acting wins.

Matthew Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for playing Mayor Tom Loftis, while Stephen Root took Supporting Actor and Kate O'Flynn won Supporting Actress.

Creator Katie Dippold won for writing, and Hiro Murai took home the Emmy for directing.

By the end of the main ceremony, Widow’s Bay had won every comedy category in which it was competing that night.

Add those six awards to the eight Creative Arts Emmys the series had already collected, and the final total reached a record-breaking 14.

Not bad for a show that premiered five months ago.

So… What Even Is Widow’s Bay?

If you're currently wondering how you somehow missed the show that just conquered television's biggest awards ceremony, you're probably not alone.

Widow’s Bay premiered on Apple TV in April and centers on Tom Loftis, the mayor of a struggling island community off the New England coast.

Tom desperately wants to transform Widow's Bay into the next Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard and revive its tourism industry.

There's just one tiny problem.

The locals are convinced the island is cursed.

Tom initially dismisses their stories as ridiculous superstitions — until tourists begin arriving and those supposedly ridiculous stories start becoming very real.

The result is a combination of small-town comedy and genuine horror that somehow works.

Apple describes the series as blending character-driven comedy with actual scares, and that unusual mix quickly turned the show into a word-of-mouth hit.

Matthew Rhys Had an Even Crazier Night

As huge as the night was for Widow’s Bay, Matthew Rhys somehow managed to make even more Emmy history himself.

In addition to winning Lead Actor in a Comedy for Widow’s Bay, Rhys won Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for The Beast in Me.

That made him the first actor to win two lead-acting Emmys in different categories during the same year.

And because he previously won Lead Actor in a Drama for The Americans, Rhys has now won lead-acting Emmys across drama, comedy and limited-series categories.

Basically, he had a very good Monday.

The Show Nobody Expected Just Became the Show to Beat

Part of what makes the Widow’s Bay takeover so interesting is how quickly it happened.

This isn't a long-running prestige series finally getting its flowers after years of nominations.

This was Season 1.

The show received 19 Emmy nominations for its debut season and walked away with 14 wins.

Creator Katie Dippold even acknowledged just how bizarre the show's road to the Emmys was while accepting Outstanding Comedy Series, thanking Apple for allowing the team to take such an unusual creative swing.

And audiences helped get it there.

Dippold credited the viewers who began talking about the show online and spreading the word when it first premiered. What started as a slightly strange horror-comedy about a cursed New England island turned into one of television's biggest breakout hits.

Now it has the Emmys to prove it.

And Yes, Season 2 Is Coming

The good news for everyone who discovers Widow’s Bay after its Emmy sweep?

The story isn't over.

Apple TV has already renewed the series for Season 2, meaning we'll officially be heading back to the definitely-not-cursed island.

After winning 14 Emmys in its first season, though, expectations are going to look a little different this time around.

Widow’s Bay entered the year as one of television's strangest new comedies.

It left Emmy night as the most awarded comedy season in Emmy history.

So if you've been looking for your next binge, consider this your sign.

Apparently, everyone is going to Widow's Bay.
