Madonna Is Returning to the VMAs Stage After 23 Years

The Queen of Pop is opening the 2026 VMAs — and her history with the show makes this much more than another awards-show performance.
Madonna is officially returning to the MTV Video Music Awards stage, more than two decades after one of the most talked-about performances in the show’s history.
The pop icon will open the 2026 MTV VMAs on Sept. 27, marking her first live performance at the awards show in 23 years. CBS and MTV announced the news Wednesday, confirming that Madonna will take the stage in Los Angeles following the release of her latest album, Confessions II.
And she isn’t exactly returning quietly.
Madonna enters this year’s show with a career-high 11 nominations, making her the most-nominated artist of the night. Her nominations include Video of the Year, Artist of the Year and Song of the Year. It is also the third time in her career that she has led the VMA nominations.
MTV teased the announcement on social media with a message that immediately pointed fans toward the dance floor: “I’ve got something I want to talk about...” before confirming Madonna’s performance.
A Full-Circle VMA Moment
For Madonna, the VMAs have never just been another awards show.
Her relationship with MTV’s biggest night dates all the way back to the inaugural VMAs in 1984, when she performed “Like a Virgin” in a wedding dress and famously rolled across the stage after losing a shoe.
The moment wasn’t entirely planned.
“I’ll just pretend I meant to do this,” Madonna later recalled thinking after the shoe came off. She continued the performance on the floor, inadvertently creating one of the defining images of her early career.
At the time, not everyone thought the performance would help her career. Madonna later recalled that her manager believed she had “ruined your career.” Instead, the performance became one of the moments most closely associated with both Madonna and the VMAs.
She continued building that reputation with performances including “Express Yourself” in 1989 and the Marie Antoinette-inspired “Vogue” in 1990. In 1986, she became the first solo female artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award.
Then Came 2003
Madonna’s last VMA performance was one that an entire generation of pop-culture fans still remembers.
She opened the 2003 ceremony alongside Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, with Spears and Aguilera dressed as brides and Madonna appearing as the groom. The performance became instantly infamous when Madonna kissed both singers onstage.
Now, 23 years later, she is returning to the same show she helped turn into a destination for unpredictable pop-culture moments.
Rolling Stone recently argued that Madonna’s influence can still be felt in the artists who have followed her onto the VMA stage, writing that her performances “defined and constantly redefined the standard for a VMAs performance.”
That history makes her 2026 return feel bigger than a typical comeback performance.
Madonna has already given the VMAs some of their most recognizable moments. Now, after more than two decades away from performing at the show, she gets another chance to create one.
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, hosted by Snoop Dogg, will air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m. ET on CBS, with a simulcast on MTV and streaming on Paramount+.
